E-Business: Technology and Management

Current technologies especially communication technologies of our era have been changing the way we live and the way we think thus, the way business operates. On the other hand, the shifts in business paradigms require, hence lead to, new technological innovations. This two-way interaction is leading us to a digital future. This digital era obviously suggests new rules. Different from the technology-management relationship in the past, today firms are not only close followers of technology but inventors of technology too.

Change the way businesses operate

Improvements in technology and changes in business certainly have been altering many things that we took for granted. E-business undoubtedly transforms the market phenomenon in every sense. Market concept is beginning to gain virtual characteristics. By the Internet, digital markets are global inborn. E-businesses do business on the Worldwide Web not in a specific region or country. The Internet provides a global presence. Thinking globally requires considering global competition rules, differences in languages and cultures etc. Firms need to think about global pricing and delivery capabilities. Globalization is continuously creating opportunities for e-business; on the other hand, e-business also facilitates the globalization progression. E-business obviously changes the responsiveness and convenience of the firms because it changes the time concept in all activities everything is just one click away. Internet is the new channel to deliver products and services but it also facilitate integration with suppliers and customers as well. Unexpectedly, those changes lead to radical transformations in organizational structures.

E-business initiates both some economic and social transformations in a macro level. From economic perspective; increasing global competition results in decreasing in price performance ratios. Moreover, reaching new markets also positively stimulates productivity. Required structural transformations for e-business will probably have many social consequences additionally; since while it is creating new business opportunities as well as new positions, it also removes some conventional businesses and jobs.

E-commerce vs. E-business

E-business and e-commerce, despite their interchangeably daily usage, have different meanings. E-commerce, whether business-to-business or business to consumers, entails an electronic transaction whereas e-business covers the whole value chain from inputs, all processes, to outputs. Thus e-business suggests structural transformations in all processes as well as in the organization itself. Having a corporate homepage and an online storefront is a grand commencement but are not adequate to explain the all e-business phenemenon. A proper e-business is the business that makes use of the Internet and software applications to progress to more efficient, more cost effective and flexible operations. E-business is not an IT project, it is certainly related with all the operations in a firm.

Opportunities and Benefits

As discussed in e-revolution article of European Commission, e-business suggests several opportunities to businesses and corresponding benefits to customers. Coverage of computer networks re-defines the borders of businesses. E-business makes possible even for the smallest firms to acquire a global presence. Consequently customers have a global choice, not considering of their physical locality at all. Enhanced competitiveness and consequently improved quality of service for customers are the predictable result of the global presence.

Abandoning the concept of mass production and shifting towards individuation is not something new but e-business certainly constitute an appropriate platform for mass customization since it enables to gather detailed information on the needs of each individual customer and automatically tailor products and services to those individual needs. It is becoming much more easier to get personalized products and services at mass market prices.

E-business solutions serve more rapid responses to needs in many cases, since they shorten supply chains. Direct distribution channels are generally more convenient and eliminate unnecessary steps in reaching to end-customers. Sometimes products can be delivered electronically films, software, articles magazines etc . Moreover, reduction in transaction costs and overheads results in price reductions for customers.

New rules, new markets, new needs inspire novel business opportunities which also provide the opportunities for entirely new products and services for customers.

Deficiencies of Internet

Being stateless brings about various legal difficulties; there is no upper authority over the Internet. Since the Internet is not designed for commerce there are serious security problems as well. Those inappropriate and unsuitable circumstances constitute the most serious deficiencies of the Internet for commerce. However, developing technologies come up with effective solutions. Digital signatures, public private keys, secure socket layers; certificate authorities and some other developments in encryption and authorization procedures are some of the recent solutions for security problems.

Despite all arguments against pervasive use of the Internet and deficiencies of Internet for commercial use, it is almost impossible to ignore its power on future business models. I believe considering the Internet and e-business as a new management fad is nothing but losing time because e-business will be the inevitable future of all businesses.
