The past 50 years have seen a considerable increase in global tourism. Despite the undeniable economic prosperity it has brought to many host countries, I would argue that the overall impact of international holidaymaking has in fact been negative. Two of the primary drawbacks associated with this trend are as follows.
First of all, global tourism tends to export many negative aspects of western culture. Since it is only the wealthy who can afford to travel abroad, developing countries like Thailand and Indonesia have become the playgrounds of tourists from more affluent ones. In many such nations, this influx of mainly western tourists has brought with it problems such as prostitution as well as alcoholism and drug abuse. Admittedly, international tourism does have the potential to foster greater understanding and tolerance between people of different cultures. However, this is unlikely to occur while it remains such a potent symbol of western cultural domination and moral decadence.
Even more disturbing, though, is the environmental degradation that international tourism has caused in many parts of the world. One particularly salient example of this is the Great Barrier Reef in Australia-the countless boats, drivers and snorkellers that have visited the reef over the past few decades have gradually destroyed vast sections of coral. Similarly, world renowned Kuta Beach in Bali has become heavily polluted in recent years. In order to be sustainable, greater regulation of global tourism is required.
In conclusion, the challenges presented by the booming international tourist industry are numerous and complex. Although they are by no means insurmountable, it is highly unlikely that they will be resolved in the foreseeable future.
2.International travel is becoming cheaper, and countries are opening their doors to more and more tourists. Do the advantages of increased tourism outweigh its disadvantages?
國(guó)際旅行越來越便宜,各國(guó)都向越來越多的游客敞開大門。旅游業(yè)的優(yōu)勢(shì)大于他的劣勢(shì)嗎?
Air travel combined with early retirement and people with money to spend has meant that more and more people can travel the world. Some countries, especially those with famous historical sights and beautiful natural scenery try to attract this large market. While there are some problems that can be caused with all this travel, generally it is a positive thing.
Firstly, consider that all these tourists mean money that governments are eager to tap into. For many countries, tourism is a big part of GDP and without it their economies would suffer. Foreign tourists bring important dollars to the service industry and lots of small shops and vendors.
Secondly, by encouraging tourism governments are promoting their cities and countries. In my country, China, for example, increased tourism and hosting the Olympics has changed people's perception of our country. At the same time, tourism allows local people to gain exposure to people from other countries, which is also a good thing.
Of course it's not always a perfect picture. Not all tourists have a good attitude and manners. And in some cases they may even have a negative influence on the local population. But these situations are not so common, and embassies can create tough guidelines for getting a visa. This seems like a reasonable compromise.
To conclude, international travel is a great thing, but it is a privilege that should not be abused. Governments should encourage it, but also put in place measures to keep dangerous people away. This will result in a win-win situation for everyone.
3.Some people think traveling abroad is necessary while others think that is not necessary because TV and the internet can give the same information. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
去其他地方學(xué)習(xí)其他文化是沒有必要的。我們可以從書本、電影和互聯(lián)網(wǎng)上學(xué)習(xí)。你在多大程度上同意或不同意?
When it comes to the issue about which approach should be recommended to people who are interested in other countries, some people may argue that traveling may be an optimal choice, but others believe that TV and the internet could be a substitution of traveling.
On one hand, there is a necessity of traveling to other countries because visitors could touch other cultures to a deeper degree. When a visitor comes to a country, s/he may make acquaintance with local residents and enjoy local food. For example, a visitor could really enjoy Sangria, a famous wine mixed with fruits, in Spain, but not just stare at a picture of Sangria on books and imagine its taste. Then, such experience enables a visitor to really know what a country is with more details.
On the other hand, TV and the Internet provide the public with an alternative way to learn a country. It is common that there exist a lot of forums on the Internet where a lot of visitors may share their unique experience of trips generously. Then, users could conveniently search for any information they need concerning about any specific country on such forums. Similarly, TV programs could provide viewers with information collected by editors that could also prove to be true and trustful under most conditions.
From my own perspective, these two approaches do not necessarily contradict each other, but just fit various groups of people. For visitors who have sufficient time, energy, and budgets, having a tour to some countries may be recommended to them since they could have a better understanding of alien cultures. However, for people who are occupied with their heavy work or have financial burden, traveling may not be accessible for them and thereby watching TV programs and scanning the Internet may be a better option for them.
